About Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, California
Located in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range, about 180 miles (of driving) south of Yosemite, is Sequoia National Park. And just in its backyard is Kings Canyon National Park, which is why they are often grouped together. When you visit one, you must visit the other! Together, they are home to some of the largest living organisms in the world, including the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest living thing. If that isn’t enough, these parks are also famous for soaring mountains, including the highest point in the contiguous US, deep canyons, including the deepest canyon in the US, wide open meadows, and roaring rivers. In our opinion, these parks are some of the most underrated in Northern America.
Best time to visit:
March to June and September to November
*Many roads close once the snow comes so you probably don’t want to visit during the winter months, unless you are prepared for detours and closures
Highlights
Drive your car through a fallen sequoia tree at Tunnel Log
Gaze up at General Sherman tree and feel very, very small
Go underground in a marble cavern in Crystal Cave
